8 Explain reasons for referral. (AC 4.2)

There are many circumstances worth considering to referral patients. If the patient case outrage the counsellor knowledge or if a matter of helping patient required additional skills counsellor do not possess. Under conditions like those patients should be transferred to counsellor who has previous experience coping with the particular issue.

When an individual has an issue that can not be resolved by counselling practitioner or if a certain issue must be resolved first before therapy. In this place, we may arise severe drug misuse cases. Therefore, the patient should be transferred to the appropriate entity.

Where patients have been diagnosed with psychiatric conditions that impede an established contact. For example Schizofrenia. If there is no logical contact with the patient or experience symptoms as ‘hearing voices, hallucinations and other condition disturbing dialog. That kind of patient should be forwarded to a psychiatrist.

If there is a request from a customer to establish longer sessions then the consuller can agree to. In occasions like this counsuller should forward the patient or recommend alternative service.

Under circumstances, that customer needs to overcome the counselor service offer. For example, if the patient would like to eliminate phobia and counsellor does not offer CBT. In a case like this patient should be forwarded to a CBT specialist.

Where there is no established report with the patient and the relationship seems to not work. Especially when counsellor fails to establish a psychological bond with patients. When individuals are reluctant to share information. Also in a case when the relationship is not effective and do not bring benefits to the patient.

Where counselors experience a lack of comfort or struggle about own safety in the period of the session. There may be a situation like aggressive behaviors or threatening. With an issue like this counselor should forward the patient to a different therapist.
