16 Explain the concept of the integrative model . (AC 2.1)

The concept of the integrative model assumes combining and mixing all of the approaches. It is a relatively new and fresh view of existing counselling protocols. Integrative models join and combine methods previously assessed as not compatible into collectively work new approaches. Probably this model was developed just because there was no novelty in the field. Some counsellors discovered that individuals have different needs and do not like to be embodied in one singular realm. To not abuse currently well-established approaches integrative model is required to jump from one approach to another method when we work with multiple cases. This kind of point of view does not breach credit coined by designers of the particular method. The integrative model seems to be a universal key if one protocol is not enough to work with customer cases.

There are five main integrative model approaches and many others more exotic.

Transactional Analysis (TA)

Conception developed by Eric Berne. This approaches combine the psychodynamic theory of personality with Roger’s person-centred counselling. The main outcome should be here positive regard for individuals and increased personal growth.

Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT)

Cat evolution is the integration of cognitive psychoanalytic with Vygotskian idea on sociocultural theory. This approach emphasised to the importance of culture and language to cognitive development.

Hill’s three-stage model

Was coined by Hill (2014), and it has three stages.




It embodied person-centred elements with psychoanalytic and cognitive-behavioural.

Curves of life

Butler et al. (2010) defined this protocol as a way to explore meaning associated with random elements of chaos. This theory is really closely associated with Austin Osman Spare and probably is a more occultic technique than real psychology. However, in modern psychology, we go back constantly to witchcraft. And demand for those kinds of approaches will rise for sure.

Schlossberg’s (1995) 4S approach

4S acronyms are resolved to:

Situation ( How situation occurred and what happen)

Self (What psychological resources are available to individual)

Support (who when and from whom help may be obtained)

Strategies (What are individual copping abilities)

It is quite useful for counsellors thus, it provides clear evidence of resources helpful to find a positive outcome.
